Newborn Sessions Don’t Have to Be Indoors
One of the biggest misconceptions about newborn photography is that it has to be done in a studio or even indoors at all.
While I have photographed many indoor newborn sessions, they are not the only way to capture your little one. Newborn sessions can also be relaxed, natural, and full of movement outdoors, just like this session at Whitnall Park in Milwaukee.

A Calm, Natural Newborn Session at Whitnall Park
When Jennifer and I first talked about doing a newborn session with her and her son, we knew that we wanted to do the photos outside. On the day of, we lucked out with the weather because it was absolutely perfect! The heat of the sun made for gorgeous lighting and it made it warm and cozy for her little man as well.
The entire session was so relaxed and laid back. We wandered around Whitnall park with her dog and newborn baby in the stroller while we found some beautiful spots we wanted to photograph at.

Newborn Sessions Can Be Playful and Real
I think people are often surprised when I say newborn sessions do not have to be still and silent. They can be playful. They can include siblings running around, they can include your dog tagging along and being part of the chaos, and they can also include those quiet and relaxed moments like when Jennifer was breast feeding her son in the flowers.
Those little moments like that are what make a newborn session so meaningful and those images usually end up being the faves.

Including Your Whole Family (Even the Dog)
One of my favorite parts about this session was Jennifer including her pup! Pets are part of the family too, and I love when they are included in sessions like this. It makes the experience feel even more authentic and fun.
There is something so special about documenting everyone together in this season including your furry friends.

Why Outdoor Newborn Sessions Work So Well
Outdoor newborn sessions are usually one of my favorites because they are very relaxed and it’s a great way for everyone to get some fresh air and reset including mom.
Plus, there is ample room to move, room to breathe, and no worries about having to stand still or pose perfectly. It helps me to capture those true candid moments for you and your family.
A Reminder That There Is No “Right Way” to Do This
Your newborn session does not have to look a certain way to be meaningful. It can be in-home (like this newborn session I did in Menomonee Falls), in-studio, or even outdoors. Regardless, the most important part is capturing your family exactly as you are.
