Winter Family Photo Style Guide ❄

Tips & Tricks

Planning what to wear for winter photos doesn’t have to be stressful. The goal? Stay warm, stay comfortable, and look like you. I put together this guide to make outfit planning super simple so you can show up relaxed and ready to enjoy your session.

Choose a Color Palette

Instead of everyone wearing the exact same color, pick a few tones that work well together. For winter, think cozy and earthy: deep greens, warm burgundy, creamy neutrals, or soft browns. These shades photograph beautifully against the winter backdrops.

Layer Up

Layers are your best friend in the winter. Not only do they keep you warm, but they also add texture and interest to your photos. Think sweaters over dresses, cardigans, scarves, tights, boots, or even a cute jacket you can pop on and off.

Comfort First

If you’re freezing or uncomfortable, it’ll show in the photos. Make sure kids have warm socks, boots that are easy to walk in, and outfits that let them move. Don’t worry—I’ll help pose and guide so everyone still looks great while staying cozy.

Things to Avoid

A few things that don’t photograph well:

  • Super bright/neon colors (they can distract from your faces)
  • Big logos or writing on clothes
  • Wrinkled outfits
  • Transition lenses (they’ll look like sunglasses in photos)

Outfit Inspiration

Here are a couple of example family looks pulled together to give you ideas:

You don’t need to copy these exactly—use them as a guide to mix and match your own closet favorites. And best part? I created an Amazon shopping list for you to find almost all of these outfits on: Click Here

Final Tip

At the end of the day, the most important thing is that your family feels like your family. Wear what makes you comfortable and happy. The laughs, snuggles, and real moments we capture together will matter way more than the outfits.
